What to do when your design system isn’t enough
…Despite having a well-developed design system, one that delivered 34 different components including their various states, and 12 different patterns, plus guidance on color, typography, and data visualization, there was still a level of guidance missing on IBM Cloud. The result of this guidance gap was a product that still felt disjointed, despite having similar colors, buttons, and typography.
…It was immediately apparent that each team had implemented Carbon within their product areas differently. The result was an experience that lacked cohesion, and left the user having to be “re-trained” constantly because there was not an established pattern for expected behavior within the UI.
